Chevrolet Corvette

All generations of Chevrolet Corvette / Chevrolet Corvette

History Chevrolet Corvette

Construction of a sports car for the corporation General Motors was a matter of prestige, because the main competitor in the American market, Ford, had its own sport car. The development of a new machine under the Chevrolet brand began in 1951, and at the end of 1953 the first production batch of 300 snow-white cabriolets with a red saloon was given the proud name Corvette.

All these machines were assembled by hand. They were equipped with a powerful petrol engine of 4.1 liters, which was aggregated with a 3-speed manual or 2-speed automatic transmission. The peculiarity of all the modifications of the first generation was the design of the rear suspension – it was dependent, rigidly attached to the body, which, naturally, could not but affect the comfort of movement. In 1955, the car began to be optionally equipped with a new, eight-cylinder 4.3-liter petrol engine.

The first restyling model survived in 1956, receiving a new body shape, on which there was no place for stylistic “fins” over the rear stop lights.

Also the car got electric window regulators, hydraulic folding roof, 4-speed manual gearbox.

The first-generation Corvette was renewed twice more – in 1958 (the length of the body was increased, square headlights, a new steering wheel and a dashboard placed directly in front of the driver) and 1962 (rear auto updates – round brake lights, other bumpers, new 4.6 and 5.3 liters) years.

The second generation of the model, published in 1963, was transformed not only in terms of exterior and interior design. In addition to the cabriolet under the name Corvette began to produce a two-door coupe. Above the design of the car worked a whole galaxy of known at the time masters, each of which brought its own detail.

Corvette of that time was the shape of the wheel disks with three-bladed "knives"

As a result, the compartment looked like a real sea corvette, with a characteristic “stern” and a long “nose”, in which the retractable headlights of the head light hid. A distinctive feature of the Corvette of that time was the shape of the wheel disks with three-bladed “knives”. The rear suspension has become independent, which improved the handling of the car and the comfort of movement in it.

Equipped with a 6.2-liter gasoline engine and 4-speed "mechanics"

Equipped with a 6.2-liter gasoline engine and 4-speed “mechanics”, or a 2-speed “automatic”. In 1965, the 6.2 liter was replaced by the 6.4 liter engine, and the drum brakes of all the wheels were changed to disk ones. In 1966, a 7.0 liter engine was optionally available, and the car began to be completed with a radio receiver, air conditioning, a height-adjustable steering column and headrests.

The third generation was released in 1968. Corvette received a new body with expressive front wings, a new hood with false air intakes.

economical 5.3 and 5.7 liter engines

The interior has also changed. Older engines were replaced by more economical 5.3 and 5.7 liter engines. Withdraw from production 2-band automatic transmission, which was replaced by a 3-band. In 1970, a new 7.0 liter engine was added, a facelift was performed (a new radiator grille appeared), and the salon began to be finished with black leather of high quality. In the next few years, the manufacturer brought the car’s engines to life, deforming them and making them more environmentally friendly.

In 1978, by the 25th anniversary of the model, the anniversary series Corvette was released

In 1978, by the 25th anniversary of the model, the anniversary series Corvette was released. The car received a new design of the rear of the body in the style of elevator, a luxurious interior and a modified instrument panel.

Two years later, a restyling was carried out, as a result of which the car had a lightweight chassis and a body with a more streamlined form than the previous version. The seats were replaced by sports, with pronounced lateral and lumbar support. A new speedometer appeared in the instrument panel, indicating a maximum speed of 137 km / h. Also, the shape of the rear optics was modified. In 1982, the car, as an option, was equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The fourth generation of the Corvette was presented in 1984. Naturally, the exterior design was redesigned (a new hood, headlights, which were no longer hiding in the body, rear window and rims) and interior (electronic-analog dashboard, a new form of armchair, steering wheel).

5.7 liter petrol engine

Weight of the machine was reduced due to the use of aluminum parts in the body structure, chassis and 5.7 liter petrol engine.

cabriolet was added to the body modification of the coupe

In 1985, the engine was added to the engine, and a year later a cabriolet was added to the body modification of the coupe, which was not manufactured since 1975. The car received the ABS system, factory anti-theft alarm, an additional stop signal, and the main optics became a round shape.

In 1988, by the 35th anniversary of the release of the model, a limited-edition “white” Corvette coupe series was produced, and standard versions received updated five-spoke wheels. The following year, the 4-speed “mechanics” retired, which was replaced by the 6-step, produced by ZF.

1991 was marked by the restyling of the model and the appearance of a side airbag for the driver. Also, the car began to equip the traction control system, ESP, front airbag for the passenger, keyless entry system.

In 1997, the official sales of the fifth generation Corvette began.

coupe, again received collapsible headlights of a head light, the updated 5.7 liter engine with system of direct injection

The car began to be produced only in one body modification – a coupe, again received collapsible headlights of a head light, the updated 5.7 liter engine with system of direct injection. However, a year later the manufacturer returned the convertible to the conveyor.

In 2000, the engine of the machine was modified

In 2000, the engine of the machine was modified, which became more economical and environmentally friendly, and the model received new alloy wheels. And in 2003, when the 50th anniversary of the model was celebrated, it was already equipped with a pneumatic self-adjustable suspension in the basic configuration.

Today, the Corvette is produced in the sixth generation, although another generation is already preparing for the presentation, which is expected to be presented in 2013.

Exterior

The sixth generation is produced on a new platform, with an elongated wheelbase, but the dimensions of the body (length and width) are less than that of the previous generation. There are six modifications: standard coupe and convertible, Grand Sport versions in the same bodies as standard ones, and the Z06 and ZR1 coupe.

Z06 and ZR1 coupe

All modifications have a wedge-shaped front bumper with a wide air intake, a spoiler, and built-in round fog lamps. Headlights of the head light stopped “hiding” in the hood, and were divided into near and far light.

Aft optics received LEDs, but the shape remained the same, large and round. The glazing area of the cabin has increased, and good side visibility is promoted by the side mirrors larger than the “predecessor”.

Interior

Thanks to the enlarged wheelbase, the Corvette interior has become more spacious, especially at the bottom. Everything in the interior of the model speaks of its sports past and present: sports seats with embroidered racing flags (they also topped the wheel hub), and pronounced lateral support, divided by a powerful central tunnel into the two halves of the cockpit.

Specifications

Today the model is equipped with two gasoline turbocharged engines of 6.0 and 7.0 liters. These units are paired with a 6-speed “mechanics” or “automatic” with the function of manual gear shift.

Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray

New generation of the famous American coupe, whose production began in 2013. Engineers of the automobile manufacturer Chevrolet managed to create a revolutionary 7th version of the car, which deserved the legendary emblem of Stingray. When designing a car, it was decided to abandon the usual steel, replacing it with aluminum alloys and carbon fiber. Also, the car is equipped with an upgraded power unit with a maximum output of 465 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque, paired with an automatic transmission of seven steps. This allows you to accelerate the car to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds. It is worth noting that this version of Corvette has become the most dynamic for the entire time of the model’s existence.

100 km / h in 4.2 seconds

The exterior of a powerful coupe deserves a separate article, it retained similarities with its predecessors, but it looks very modern and stylish. Each element was designed in accordance with aerodynamic characteristics, and even the air intakes are designed with a dual purpose. The captured stream is distributed and routed in such a way as to cool all the important elements of the car and increase the downforce, while not causing resistance to movement.

The interior of the American is made with the use of expensive and high-quality materials, while maintaining a strict and sophisticated style. Aluminum and carbon inserts do not look “messed up” in expensive surroundings, but remarkably emphasize the power of the road king. And all the other elements are thought out to the last detail, the projection on the windshield of the most necessary indications helps not to be distracted by the dashboard, and does not interfere with driving. In this case, the eight-inch screen of the multimedia system can be used as an additional instrument panel for displaying secondary indications – even for monitoring the pressure in the tires of the car. And for lovers of extreme riding and ring racing, the Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray is equipped with a Performance Data Recorder system.
